The battery warranty of every electric car
Years, mileage and capacity guaranteed by the manufacturer, for the 120 models whose UK terms are recorded. What matters on a used car is how much of it is left: the year and the mileage decide everything.
The essentials
- The most common warranty in the UK: 8 years or 100,000 miles, below 70% capacity, for 77 models out of 120.
- 6 models are covered for less than eight years: Citroën Ami (3 years), Fiat Topolino (3 years), Renault Kangoo Z.E. (5 years), Renault Master Z.E. (5 years), Kia e-Niro (7 years), Kia e-Soul (7 years).
- 22 models have no published capacity threshold in the UK: the manufacturer does not say how much capacity loss it will act on.
- For 17 models, the terms are not the same in the six countries this site covers: threshold, mileage or length.
What the battery warranty covers
Two limits, whichever comes first: a number of years, counted from first registration, and a mileage. A six-year-old car that has gone past the mileage is no longer covered, even if the years still run.
The capacity threshold says when capacity loss becomes a defect: below it, the manufacturer repairs or replaces the pack; above it, the loss counts as normal wear. The most common threshold is 70%. When none is published, nothing says how much loss the manufacturer will act on.
The manufacturer warranty usually follows the car, not its owner: it passes to the used buyer. Some manufacturers make it conditional on scheduled servicing in their network: ask for the invoices before you buy.
Why the warranty changes from country to country
Manufacturers publish their terms country by country. Most of the time they are the same, but not always: the threshold, the mileage or the start year can differ. This table gives the terms recorded for the UK; the site’s other languages give those of their own country.
The battery warranty, model by model
Manufacturer terms recorded for the UK, by year of first registration. Years and mileage apply whichever comes first; below the guaranteed capacity, the pack is repaired or replaced.

Frequently asked questions
How long is an electric car battery under warranty?
Most often eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, with a 70% capacity threshold. A few manufacturers go further, often on condition of servicing in their network, and quadricycles such as the Ami or the Topolino are covered for far less. The table on this page gives every model.
Does the battery warranty pass to the used buyer?
Usually yes: the manufacturer warranty is tied to the car and runs from its first registration, however many owners it has had. Just check the servicing conditions, which some manufacturers require in their network.
What does “70% capacity” mean?
It is the threshold below which capacity loss is covered: if the battery holds only 69% of its original capacity during the warranty, the manufacturer repairs or replaces it. Above it, the loss counts as normal wear. The measurement is usually done in a workshop, by the manufacturer.
How do I know whether a specific car is still under warranty?
You need the model, the year of first registration and the mileage: the site’s battery checker works out the warranty end date and the mileage left, along with the expected state of health of the battery.
Terms recorded from manufacturers’ websites, price lists and warranty booklets, country by country, or failing that from two concurring press sources. Checked on 29 October 2026.
Is this car still under warranty?
Model, year, mileage: the battery checker gives the warranty end date and the expected state of health of the battery.
