What is this car’s battery worth?

Remaining warranty, expected state of health, battery lease and cost of a failure. All at once — and nothing you enter leaves your browser.

We check, we don’t certify. The date of first registration is shown in box B of the V5C logbook. The state of health given is a range calculated from the battery’s age, mileage and chemistry: only a measurement on the vehicle gives a figure.

Battery versions of the Renault 5 E-Tech

A model sold over several years does not have the same battery from start to finish, and two versions are often sold side by side. Identify yours: capacity and chemistry change the range, the expected degradation and the cost of a replacement.

The expected state of health of a Renault 5 E-Tech battery

Three model years of this car, at the average French annual mileage of 9,321 miles, each with its chemistry. These ranges describe where a comparable battery usually sits, not yours: use, climate and charging habits spread the fleet widely.

  • 2024 model year91 to 97%2 years, 18,641 miles, NMC chemistry
  • 2025 model year93 to 99%1 year, 9,321 miles, NMC chemistry
  • 2026 model year98 to 100%under a year, NMC or LFP depending on the version

For model years where two chemistries appear, the range covers both: LFP holds up better over time than nickel, and the gap widens with age. The battery checker will ask for your version to give an estimate that covers yours alone.

For a figure rather than a range, you need a measurement on the car. What state of health means and how it is measured.

What the energy costs per 100 miles

Charged at home, a Renault 5 E-Tech uses between £6.10 and £7.62 of electricity per 100 miles.

By comparison, a recent petrol car averages 38.7 mpg (7.3 L/100 km) in real-world use: about £20.30 of fuel per 100 miles, at the average price of unleaded petrol (£1.728 per litre on 2 November 2026).

Bottom of the range: the WLTP official consumption, 4.3 miles/kWh. Top: 25% more, the measured gap between official figures and real-world use. Electricity at £0.2632 per kWh, the Ofgem price cap.

Charging at a public charge point: prices vary too much from one operator to another to be given here.

Charging at home: a night on a plug

Plugged in for 8 hours on a 3-pin plug, a Renault 5 E-Tech adds between 65 and 80 miles; on a 16 A commando socket, between 100 and 125 miles, depending on the version and how it is driven.

The Renault 5 E-Tech battery

Sold since 2024, with a pack of about 52 kWh.

The Renault 5 E-Tech pack does not lend itself to module-by-module repair. A diagnosis is still worthwhile: the fault often lies in an ancillary component rather than the pack itself.

Which battery does the Renault 5 have?

The electric Renault 5, often called the R5 or R5 E-Tech, comes with three batteries:

  • 52 kWh (Comfort Range), NMC chemistry, since launch in 2024;
  • 40 kWh (Urban Range), NMC chemistry, orderable since November 2024 and delivered from spring 2025;
  • 36.5 kWh (Five), LFP chemistry, announced in August 2026.

The model year alone is therefore not enough to identify the battery in a used R5: since 2025, the 40 and the 52 kWh have been sold side by side. The version appears in the advert and in the car's documents; ask for it before comparing two ranges or two prices.

Warranty, leasing and recall

Renault UK warrants the R5 battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles, with a 70 % capacity threshold. A 2024 R5 therefore stays covered until 2032, unless it passes 100,000 miles first.

No R5 was sold with a leased battery: the model arrived after Renault dropped that scheme. The battery always belongs to the car.

R5s built from 12 December 2025 to 28 January 2026 are subject to a recall: a cell production anomaly may reduce range, prevent charging or cause a short circuit, and the pack is replaced free of charge. Faced with an R5 from that period, ask for proof that the recall work has been done.

Price of an R5 battery

Renault's after-sales price for the 52 kWh pack is about €14,400 including VAT in France (L'argus, June 2026). While the warranty runs, that figure only matters for damage the warranty excludes, such as an accident, which insurance then covers according to the policy.
