Electric car battery prices, model by model

The figure that gets passed around is the price of a new pack from the manufacturer’s dealer network. It is the highest price on the subject — and almost never the one you end up paying.

Three things before you look at the figures

  • The price depends on the version, not the model. A Zoe ranges from 22 to 52 kWh, a Leaf from 24 to 62: the same model name covers packs whose price can double from one to the next.
  • A new pack is not the only way out. On many models, the fault lies in a module, a contactor or the control unit, and a specialist garage replaces only the part concerned.
  • Check the warranty first. If it is still running, the bill is zero. That is the first question to settle, before any quote.

The table, model by model

Capacities come from the versions actually sold, where they have been recorded, not from a single value per model. A dash marks data we could not source: we would rather leave it blank than make it up.

Orders of magnitude for parts and labour, excluding diagnosis, recorded in France. The price of a new pack is given for comparison: it is the manufacturer’s dealer network price, not an expected bill. Only a quote drawn up after diagnosis commits to a price.

What makes the price

Most of it follows capacity. The cells account for the largest share of the bill, and a 62 kWh battery holds two and a half times as many as a 24 kWh one. That is why the table sets capacity against price: a price "per model" means nothing until you know which version you are talking about.

Next comes the design of the pack. A pack built from removable modules can be repaired: the faulty module is replaced, the cells are rebalanced, the unit is reprogrammed. A structural pack, bonded into the body, is replaced as a whole. That is why two cars of similar capacity can have very different repair costs — and it is something to know before buying, not after.

Finally, where you go. The manufacturer’s dealer network charges for a complete new pack; a specialist independent garage works on the part concerned. The two columns of the table show these two worlds.

The trap of the figures going around

Most pages answering this question quote prices recorded in 2020 or 2021, without dating them, and often for a single version of a model that had four. Cell prices have fallen sharply since, and the packs sold today are not the same.

Beware too of the opposite reasoning, which is just as common: concluding from the price of a new pack that a used electric car is a gamble. Fleet studies show replacements concentrated on the very first generations, and in the order of a few tenths of a per cent on recent vehicles. What really happens to a battery is not failure: it is the gradual loss of capacity, which can be measured and negotiated.

The three cases where you won’t pay

  • The manufacturer’s warranty is still running. It covers failure, and capacity that has dropped below a threshold, usually around 70%. It stays with the car: a used buyer benefits from it until it ends.
  • The battery is leased. It does not belong to you; replacing it is the lessor’s responsibility as soon as capacity falls below the threshold in the agreement. Read the lease agreement before buying as well as before selling.
  • The fault lies elsewhere. Charger, contactor, control unit, connectors: several symptoms blamed on "the battery" can be fixed without touching the cells. Hence the value of a diagnosis before any quote.

What this price changes in a negotiation

Faced with an advert, the replacement cost is not an expected bill: it is the ceiling of the risk you are taking on. Three figures are enough to frame it — the remaining warranty, the battery’s state of health and the cost of a module repair on that model. The checker gives them in one go for a specific car.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an electric car battery cost?

A new pack from the manufacturer’s dealer network runs to thousands of euros, and often more than €10,000 for large capacities (prices recorded in France). But that is rarely the actual bill: a faulty battery can often be repaired module by module, for a fraction of that price. The table on this page gives both orders of magnitude for each model.

Why does the price vary so much from one model to another?

Because it follows capacity in kWh first of all, which ranges from under 25 to over 75 kWh depending on the model and version, and because the pack’s design decides what can be replaced. A pack built from removable modules can be repaired; a bonded structural pack, far less easily.

Do electric car batteries often need replacing?

No, and that is the costliest misconception on the subject. Replacements are concentrated on the first generations; on recent vehicles, the rate recorded by fleet studies is in the order of a few tenths of a per cent. A battery loses capacity with age, which is not a failure and only triggers a replacement below the warranty threshold.

Who pays if the battery fails?

The manufacturer, as long as the battery warranty runs — usually 8 years or 100,000 miles, with a capacity threshold of around 70%. After that, nobody: car insurance covers accidents, fire and theft, not failure or wear. So check the remaining warranty before committing to any repair.

And if the battery is leased?

Then it does not belong to you, and you are not charged for its replacement: the lease agreement provides for a swap when capacity drops below a threshold. This applies to many used Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf. In return, the rental passes on with the car.
