Battery versions of the Renault Zoe
A model sold over several years does not have the same battery from start to finish, and two versions are often sold side by side. Identify yours: capacity and chemistry change the range, the expected degradation and the cost of a replacement.

The expected state of health of a Renault Zoe battery
Three model years of this car, at the average French annual mileage of 9,321 miles, each with its chemistry. These ranges describe where a comparable battery usually sits, not yours: use, climate and charging habits spread the fleet widely.

The battery in a Renault Zoe may be leased
On the other years concerned, both options existed and only the first owner’s contract settles the question.
What this changes, and what listings rarely say: a leased battery remains covered by its contract, often beyond the manufacturer warranty, but the lease passes on with the car and the leasing company can refuse the transfer. Ask for the lease contract and a recent bank statement showing the payment before you sign: it is the only reliable proof.
What the energy costs per 100 miles
Charged at home, a Renault Zoe uses between £7.33 and £9.48 of electricity per 100 miles.
By comparison, a recent petrol car averages 38.7 mpg (7.3 L/100 km) in real-world use: about £20.30 of fuel per 100 miles, at the average price of unleaded petrol (£1.728 per litre on 2 November 2026).

Charging at home: a night on a plug

The Renault Zoe battery
Sold from 2012 to 2024, with a pack of about 52 kWh.
The Renault Zoe pack can be repaired module by module. When only one module is at fault, the repair costs far less than a new pack.
Which battery does the Zoe have?
Three batteries followed one another from 2012 to 2024:
- 22 kWh, from 2012 to 2016;
- Z.E. 40, 41 kWh, from 2017 to 2019;
- Z.E. 50, 52 kWh, from 2019 until production ended in 2024.
In 2019, the Z.E. 40 and Z.E. 50 were sold side by side: the model year is not enough, the name appears in the advert and in the vehicle documents. None of the three has liquid cooling: the pack copes with heat and repeated rapid charging less well than an actively cooled pack, and DC rapid charging only exists on the Z.E. 50, as an option.
Lease or purchase: the first question to ask
In France, until April 2018, the battery of a new Zoe could only be leased: a monthly fee, separate from the price of the car, which follows the car when it is sold on. Buying the battery became possible on 3 April 2018, and Renault dropped the lease in early 2021.
- Zoe from 2012 to 2017: leased battery, unless a previous owner bought it out;
- Zoe from 2018 to 2020: either, depending on the month and the first buyer’s choice;
- Zoe from 2021 onwards: battery always bought with the car.
A leased battery can be bought out from the leasing company, at a price that depends on the age of the vehicle. Before buying, ask for the lease contract or the buy-out invoice: the registration document says nothing.
The Zoe battery warranty
In France, a purchased battery is warranted for 8 years or 160,000 km (about 100,000 miles) from first registration, even when bought out later. The capacity threshold that triggers the warranty varies between documents, 66% or 70%: read the one supplied with the car. A leased battery is covered by its contract as long as the fee is paid, often beyond the 8 years.
Price of a Zoe battery
The pack can be repaired module by module: a replaced module costs €450 to €1,400 at an independent EV specialist, parts and labour. A new pack from the manufacturer network comes to about €9,500, for comparison. On the early 22 kWh packs, the loss of range is gradual and well known: have the state of health measured before buying rather than budgeting for a pack.
