The battery in a Renault Twizy may be leased
On 2012 – 2017 model years, the battery could not be bought: it is leased, and a monthly fee comes on top of the price of the car. On the other years concerned, both options existed and only the first owner’s contract settles the question.
What this changes, and what listings rarely say: a leased battery remains covered by its contract, often beyond the manufacturer warranty, but the lease passes on with the car and the leasing company can refuse the transfer. Ask for the lease contract and a recent bank statement showing the payment before you sign: it is the only reliable proof.

The Renault Twizy pack does not lend itself to module-by-module repair. A diagnosis is still worthwhile: the fault often lies in an ancillary component rather than the pack itself.
Which battery does the Twizy have?
The Renault Twizy, a quadricycle built from 2012 to 2023, had a single battery: a pack of about 6.1 kWh, with LG cells, shared by the Twizy 45, the Twizy 80 and the Cargo. There is no version to ask about: the model year changes nothing about the capacity. The pack cannot be repaired module by module.
Leasing or buying the Twizy battery
In France, until October 2018, the battery of a new Twizy had to be leased: a separate monthly fee, which passes on with the vehicle. From October 2018, Renault offered to sell the battery, for €2,460 including VAT more than the price with a lease. The lease was still offered at least until January 2021, when the Twizy was the only Renault model to keep it; no source dates its end.
Faced with a used Twizy:
- 2012 to 2017: leased battery, unless a previous owner bought it out;
- 2018 to 2021: either, depending on the first buyer’s choice;
- 2022 and 2023: not established, check the documents.
Ask for the lease contract or the buy-out invoice before signing: the registration document says nothing. A leased battery can be bought out from the leasing company, at a price that depends on the age of the vehicle.
Warranty and price of a Twizy battery
No battery warranty specific to the Twizy is published in France: a leased battery is covered by its contract as long as the fee runs; for a purchased battery, read the warranty booklet handed over at the sale. Renault does not publish a price for a new pack either: it is quoted by the dealer network on request.
